RLP Breakthrough Project
Our breakthrough project is focused on delivering an excellent start in life.We are developing centres of excellence:
To increase the numbers of young people participating in education
To improve the numbers of those staying on post 16 to go on to further and higher education
To strengthen support for the transition from education to work
To improve the earning potential of young people in the local economy |
The centres of excellence are:

Launched in September 2003 by the Mayor of Rotherham, the facilities at CENT comprise of:
| Three fully equipped ICT suites for a wide range of activities including digital video |
| A lab environment for networking training |
| A rapid-prototyping room for design and technology training |
| A technical workshop for the ICT Technical Support team from RMBC |
| A conference room with breakout facilities for up to 50 people |
| Meeting rooms for up to 20 people |
ll rooms have broadband internet connectivity and whiteboard facilities.
Rooms are available to hire for training events and consultants also help to develop and
deliver bespoke courses.
An annual programme of ICT-related training events, including accreditation, is open to all.
The objectives of CENT are to:
| Provide high quality IT-training facilities for use by education and training providers in Rotherham and the sub region |
| Provide high quality training in new technologies for teachers and other staff supporting young people in schools, to develop the appropriate skills to deliver ICT-supported learning |
| Provide rapid prototyping training for Design and Technology staff |
| Stimulate interest in new technologies and the associated opportunities for careers in High Tech/High Skill industries in pupils, teachers, training providers and local business |
| Promote a range of innovative uses of the overall Magna site facilities in collaboration with local partners |
| Provide a focal point for delivery of Creative and Digital Industries training in association with Sheffield Hallam University and RCAT |
| Develop an ICT training pathway involving all local partners that will provide opportunities for the unemployed to develop skills and access work placements relevant to the needs of the labour market |
he particular strengths of CENT that differentiate it from other IT training centres in the area are:
| The lab environment for network training |
| The Apple Mac equipped room for multimedia design and publishing linked to the prototyping facilities |
| The flexibility of the room combinations on offer |
| The location adjacent to Magna offering a variety of educational and leisure activities on one spot |
| The proximity of the RMBC technician team offering on-the-spot technical support and back-up |

The WOMACK Centre
The Centre of Excellence for 13-19 Work Related Learning, the Womack Centre, will focus on making the link from education to the needs of employers. WOMACK will co-ordinate the implementation of a range of innovative initiatives, including:
| The Key Skills Programme, enabling learners to gain qualifications in work-based skills relevant to jobs |
The Enhanced Curriculum Programme for:
development of enterprise skills
use of work place settings for learning
increasing the involvement of employers and Higher Education |
| The Re-engagement Programme, addressing the needs of young people who have opted out of mainstream education or had difficulty engaging in it |
| The JET Programme and related programmes, enabling delivery of learning about manufacturing technology in schools |
All of this will support the generation of jobs and wealth in the Advanced Engineering and Metals Cluster, a high growth business sector. |

Targets for the RLP Breakthrough Project
The Centre of Excellence for 13-19 Work Related Learning, the Womack Centre, will focus on making the link from education to the needs of employers. WOMACK will co-ordinate the implementation of a range of innovative initiatives, including:
| 95% of 19 year olds to have adequate or better levels of literacy and 90% adequate or better levels of numeracy within 5 years |
| 50% of 19 year olds to train to NVQ Level 3 or above within 5 years |
| Participation in learning among 19 year olds in Higher Education to increase by 2% year on year |
| Increase in the numbers of collaborative partnerships delivering high quality education and training programmes in world class buildings developed through the Grouped Schools Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project and other funding streams |
| Increase in usage of ICT in schools, colleges and community settings to deliver innovative learning programmes |
